Jet2 sees ‘massive surge’ in bookings as resorts taken off red list

Jet2 said that they have seen an “immediate and massive surge” in bookings since news of the impending travel update broke.

Transport secretary Grant Shapps today confirmed that the UK would see a huge shake-up in international travel rules, confirming that the government will be scrapping the ‘amber’ travel list from next month.

From October 4, the amber list will no longer exist, instead the ‘red’ list will remain and then there will just be the “rest of the world”, which will remain open for visiting.

Mr Shapps said on Twitter: “[We will be] introducing a new simplified system for international travel from Mon 4 Oct, replacing the current approach with a single red list and simplified measures for the rest of the world – striking the right balance to manage the public health risk as No.1 priority.”

Eight countries have also been taken off of the red travel list, these are:

  • Turkey
  • The Maldives
  • Bangladesh
  • Pakistan
  • Egypt
  • Oman
  • Kenya
  • Sri Lanka

And Steve Heapy, the CEO of Jet2.com and Jet2holidays, said that since the news of these impending changes broke a few days ago, the company has seen a “massive surge” in bookings for flights and package holidays.

He said: “We have seen demand step up over the last few days, and there has been an immediate and massive surge in bookings for flights and package holidays on the back of this welcome news for holidaymakers in England.

“We expect the Scottish Government and Northern Ireland Executive to update their advice too and we look forward to this.

“Although it has been a long time coming, we are extremely pleased that the Government has finally committed to reopening international travel properly.”

He added that holidaymakers will likely be “frustrated” that these changes have come too late for the peak summer holiday season, but said that he knows how “delighted” they will be that holidays are no longer subject to strict rules, which he said are “completely out of step with other areas of everyday life.”

Mr Heapy added: “Having to take a pre-departure test in resort, along with an expensive PCR test after returning to the UK, has unfairly penalised hardworking customers and families for far too long.

“Although the removal of these burdens is welcome news and a step in the right direction, more can still be done.

“The Traffic Light system has been confusing and completely unfit for purpose since day one. We welcome a new approach which is easy for everyone to understand and provides certainty.”

Mr Shapps confirmed that double-vaccinated people would not need a pre-departure test before their arrival into England, from October 4; and, later in the month, the day two PCR will be replaced with a cheaper lateral flow.

Jet2 will be restarting flights and holidays to Antalya and Dalaman from September 23, following the news that Turkey is coming off of the red list.

Mr Heapy said: “We are delighted to be restarting this programme and with great deals to be had, we know there will be phenomenal demand for late-summer sunshine, October half-term breaks and winter sun. The same applies to the 40-plus destinations we are operating to.

“The desire to get away for a well-earned holiday in the sunshine has never diminished, however harsh and unfair restrictions have remained a barrier for some.

“Now many of these restrictions have been removed, the rush in bookings for flights and package holidays to sun, ski and leisure city destinations tells us just how much holidaymakers have been longing to get away.

“Holidays mean so much to everyone, and we cannot wait to take our customers away on them.”
