  • The Preacher’s Wife is being reimagined.
  • Angela Bassett and Anthony Hemingway are at the helm of the remake as producers.
  • After hearing the announcement, fans had mixed reactions.

Penny Marshall’s 1996 film The Preacher’s Wife is getting a remake — and it’s being done by none other than Emmy-winning director Anthony Hemingway and 9-1-1 star and Golden Globe winner Angela Bassett.

For those that haven’t seen the classic Christmas movie, The Preacher’s Wife (which in and of itself is a remake of the 1947 film The Bishop’s Wife) tells the story of Dudley (an angel played by Denzel Washington) coming to earth to assist preacher Henry Biggs (played by Courtney Vance, who will star in the upcoming remake) and his wife Julia (played by Whitney Houston) as they struggle to save their church and family during the holiday season.

“Christmas has always been my favorite time of the year. To be re-imagining this classic and beloved holiday story is a gift,” Anthony said, per Deadline. “When Whitney Davis brought this idea to me, I instinctively called Courtney and we knew instantly that we’d be working together to bring this uplifting story to new audiences. I couldn’t be more thrilled to be working with my friends Courtney and Angela, as well as our amazing teams at Bassett Vance Productions and Anthony Hemingway Productions.”

“Anthony will bring his distinctive, compelling cinematic style to create a fresh take on this beloved classic, while still maintaining the elements of the film that audiences have loved through the years,” Lynnette Ramirez, who serves as BVP’s Head of Development, explained. “We couldn’t be more pleased to be developing this project with Anthony.”

Reacting to the big announcement, some fans immediately began rejoicing. “Anthony! Thank you for bringing this back to screen. This is my favorite movie all-time! Can’t wait to see what has become of the church and the kids, but also meet new characters,” one person commented on the Deadline announcement. “Better now with such news 😍 ,” another said on Twitter.

Some fans, however, seemed a bit upset about remaking the classic film starring Whitney. “Leave the Whitney Houston projects alone,” one Twitter user urged. “It’s disrespectful to her craft and art she left behind and Penny Marshall. Come up with something new and original.”

Personally, we can’t wait to see it! Anything that Angela does is bound to be epic.
