Ho ho ho! American High’s first sequel, ‘The Binge 2,’ will be a Christmas movie
American High’s first sequel has officially been greenlit by Hulu.
The streaming service announced Tuesday that the Liverpool, N.Y.-based film production company will soon shoot “The Binge 2: It’s a Wonderful Binge.” Jordan VanDina, who wrote the first film, will direct the followup, which will be a “raunchy” Christmas movie shot in the Syracuse area.
“I am thrilled for my directorial debut to be a Christmas sequel to ‘The Binge,’” VanDina said in a statement. “Working with the tight-knit American High film family in Syracuse, NY has been an honor and a privilege. And like all great filmmakers say ‘Always work with children, animals and locations that involve snow and sub-zero temperatures.’ This film has all of those!”
The synopsis for “The Binge 2″ is:
“In the near future all drinking and drugs are banned except for one glorious day known as The Binge… This year that day happens to miraculously land on Christmas. Watch a holiday adventure like you’ve never seen before that includes magical storybooks, catchy songs, beautiful stop motion animation and a Christmas saga that won’t be soon forgotten… and drugs! Lots of them! Merry Bingemas!”
It will mark the first franchise for American High, which recently wrapped its 12th film in the Syracuse area in four years. Founder Jeremy Garelick bought the former A.V. Zogg Middle School in Liverpool, now known as Syracuse Studios, for $1 million in 2017 with the goal of making high school movies in the spirit of John Hughes and creating a local film school.
Garelick, who directed the first “The Binge” movie, will produce the sequel along with Will Phelps, Ryan Bennett and Molle DeBartolo. Andrew Reyes will executive produce the project.
A cast has not been announced for “The Binge 2.” Vince Vaughn, Skyler Gisondo, Dexter Darden, and Eduardo Franco starred in the first film, which was released on Hulu last year.
“The Binge” was the biggest movie ever shot in Syracuse: More than 2,000 extras and 50-60 local crew members worked on it. Scenes were shot at places like Onondaga Lake Parkway, Hanover Square, Carnegie Library, Clinton Square, Village Burger in Liverpool, a bridge in Van Buren, and the Greater Syracuse Soundstage (formerly known as the nano film hub in DeWitt).
