‘Threats of violence are never acceptable’: Dr Alex George hits back after Welsh residents slammed him for buying up four holiday cottages amid housing crisis for locals

Dr Alex George has revealed he has been threatened with violence after buying several properties in Pembrokeshire.

On Sunday the former Love Island star, 31, told how he had purchased four properties in the Welsh county and that one would be used to house a Ukrainian family fleeing the war.

But despite many applauding him for the kind gesture, some locals have slammed the star for purchasing the large amount of cottages.

Oh no: Dr Alex George has revealed he has been threatened with violence after buying several properties in Pembrokeshire as locals say he is pricing out people who live in the area

They also highlighted that people in the area are struggling to find homes themselves due to a shortage and that those buying second holiday homes like Dr Alex push up prices.

Some said that his decision to buy them was ‘disappointing and upsetting’ and criticised him for being part of the problem that locals cannot afford to live or buy a property in their area.

After receiving the backlash, Dr Alex has defended his decision, saying he has received threats of violence after announcing the purchase and that the cottages would not be suitable for residential purchase.

News: On Sunday the former Love Island star, 31, told how he had purchased four properties in the Welsh county that one would be used to house a Ukrainian family fleeing the war

He wrote on his Instagram Story: ‘For clarification, because it seems to have caused quite a lot of confusion. These ‘cottages’ are a singular converted farm out-house. These are on the land/property of another residential house.

‘I am not going to discuss all the details of this because of the obvious (it’s social media). There is a good reason why we have opted for most to be for holiday stars and one of which can be for a refugee family and yes, afterwards a local if the family decide to leave.

‘I appreciate those who have tried to respectfully share concerns about housing the area. Sadly I have received a number of threats of violence which is never acceptable. Let alone abuse.

‘You can take my word for it or not, these cottages would not be possible for residential purchase. If (I will not be pushing anyone out the door) and when the refugees wanted to leave, I will invite a local to rent the suitable flat.

Having his say: After receiving the backlash, Dr Alex has defended his decision, saying he has received threats of violence after announcing the purchase and that the cottages would not be suitable for residential purchase

‘I would happily meet with local leaders to discuss housing in Pembrokeshire and see how I can support. I am an avid campaigner and activist myself but being respectful and reasonable should always be a baseline for discussion.’

In response to his announcement that he was buying the houses, one local wrote on Twitter: ‘Dr Alex George posting on Instagram today about how he has bought 4 holiday homes in Pembrokeshire has been extremely disappointing and upsetting. Yes it is admirable that he is going to let a Ukrainian family live in one of the homes but what about the other 3 homes?

‘Pembrokeshire is going through a housing crisis and has been for some time now and the situation is not looking like it will improve any time soon. The current extra tax for second homes is clearly not working…’.
