Spain could be cheaper than staycations in the UK this summer

Travel restrictions are lifting for many holiday hotspots and airlines have seen a surge in bookings.

But as the cost of living rises, some may be leaning towards choosing a ‘staycation’ over a holiday abroad this summer.

Last year, there was a big push from cities and seaside towns around the UK as families chose to book getaways closer to home amid strict international travel rules.

Spain could ‘allow un-vaccinated British travellers within days’ as restrictions ease

But as prices are indeed going up in the UK and even flight prices are expected to rise, as Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary warned, we looked to see if holidays in the UK were in fact cheaper than those abroad.

Of course, prices do rise at peak times like the school holidays. In this instance, we will look at holidays in the UK and in Spain for June. We’ve looked at how to find cheap flights using the TikTok hack, which gave us return flights to Malaga for under £50 from Glasgow, but here’s what we have found for holiday packages.

Holidays in June

Using Travel Supermarket, you can bag a TUI holiday to Magaluf in Majorca on June 10 for a week, from Glasgow Airport, hotel and breakfast included for £541 per person.

Love Holidays are also offering a four day holiday in Cala d’Or in Majorca for £166 per person on June 5. At the Blue Sea Es Bolero Aparthotel, this deal is self catering and you fly out from Glasgow Prestwick.

Closer to home, we looked at a holiday to the Isle of Skye could be. Searching the same dates as the Magaluf holiday, a hotel with breakfast could set you back £1,489, according to a listing on Booking.com.

From June 12 for four nights, the Lake District is full of options from hostels, hotels and guest houses. For four nights, we found a guest house available on Booking.com priced for two people for £202 in total. While this doesn’t include food, we think it’s a good deal for a getaway.

Also in the Lake District, if you’re looking for somewhere with breakfast included and can stretch the cash, we found Tithe Barn on Booking.com. From June 5, for four nights you can have a deluxe king bed, breakfast included for £626.

The verdict

Of course, when booking accommodation prices vary depending on the location and accommodation type of your choosing.

In some cases, it can be cheaper to go abroad that stay in the UK, depending on where you want to go.

The hotels on offer in Majorca look decent, between three and four stars and offer a pool.

Whereas the cheapest options for accommodation won’t be five star hotels and you still have to arrange travel to your destination.
