Greene King is giving away pints of beer for free in honour of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, after initially planning on selling them for 6p.

Ahead of the celebrations this bank holiday weekend, Greene King is getting in the jubilee spirit early with an offer available for today only.

The pub chain wanted to sell beers for a tiny price for a special reason–the original 6p price tag honoured the price of a beer in 1952–the year Queen Elizabeth II became queen.

Andrew Gallagher, Marketing Director at Greene King Local Pubs, said: “The Platinum Jubilee is a fantastic way for the UK to come together and celebrate our Queen and country, so we wanted to take our customers back to where it all began–1952, a time when Vera Lynn ruled the charts and pints were only 6p.

“Some of our regulars may even remember watching the coronation back in 1952, although they may have been too young to enjoy a pint then.”

However, Greene King has since discovered that they cannot sell pints for 6p under lisencing laws–so the pubs will give beer away for free instead.

A Greene King spokesperson said: “One of the ideas we had was for a promotion in 400 of our managed pubs where customers could buy one pint each of Greene King IPA for 6p today–the same price it was in 1952.

“We thought this was a great way to celebrate this remarkable occasion and we’ve been thrilled at the response from customers.”

The pub chain added: “However, we have some good news for everyone, which is that we will now be giving the Jubilee first pint of Greene King IPA away free of charge today, as we now understand it’s not permissible under the licensing act to charge the 6p.”

Liscening laws prevent businesses from selling alcohol at heavily discounted prices to reduce over-consumption–but Greene King is allowed to give away the pints for free.

How to claim a free pint at Greene King

To claim your free pint, visit a participating Greene King Local pub or Flaming Grill and order a pint of Greene King’s IPA by using the code word “1952.” The offer is only available on Monday, May 30, while stocks last, and customers can only claim one free pint each.

When the change was anounced, Home Secretary, Priti Patel, said: “For 70 years Her Majesty The Queen has served the UK and the Commonwealth with the utmost dignity, steadfastness and resolve.

“The Platinum Jubilee is a truly historic national occasion, which will see families, friends and communities across the country come together to celebrate this unprecedented landmark in a remarkable reign.

“Over the extended bank holiday weekend, we will be able to raise a glass to toast Her Majesty’s incredible service to our country, while also providing a boost to the hospitality industry after a challenging couple of years.”
