Are shops open today? Jubilee bank holiday supermarket opening times for Tesco, Morrisons, Aldi, Lidl and more

The Queen is marking 70 years on the throne this year, the first time that a British monarch has celebrated a Platinum Jubilee.

For many people around the UK, this means a four-day weekend, thanks to the bonus of an additional bank holiday in Elizabeth II’s honour.

While the extra day off is very welcome for anyone planning on joining the large-scale celebrations or hosting a party, you might encounter some disruption as a result.

Postal services will be affected, for example, while shops might be operating at different times – here’s what we know about the main supermarkets over the Platinum Jubilee.

When are supermarkets open for the Jubilee?

Asda

The hours for individual stores may vary, however, based on previous bank holidays it is likely some Asda stores could open from 8am instead of 7am and close at 8pm instead of 10pm or midnight on the bank holidays.

Aldi

Aldi says that on Thursday 2 June, stores are open from 8am to 10pm. On Friday, the hours are again 8am to 10pm, and the same on Saturday. On Sunday, stores will open later, at 10am, and close earlier at 4pm.

However, it advises that opening hours may vary, so check your local store’s opening hours here.

Lidl

Lidl advises that opening times will vary from store to store across the bank holiday weekend.

It encourages customers to check the opening times of their nearest store using the store locator here.

Morrisons

Morrisons stores should have regular bank holiday opening hours on Thursday 2 and Friday 3 June, between 7am and 8pm. They will return to normal opening hours on Saturday.

Sainsbury’s

Sainsbury’s stores will most likely to open between 7am and 9pm during the bank holidays, a reduction in normal hours.

Tesco

Tesco’s opening hours on Thursday 2 and Friday 3 June will vary from store to store Customers are advised to check the opening times of their local store here.

Stores will most likely opening at normal times, but close earlier at 8pm.

Waitrose & Partners

The majority of Waitrose stores will open from 8am to 6am, with some opening later, during the Jubilee bank holidays.

The retailer advises customers to check the Waitrose website for local store opening times.

When are the other UK bank holidays in 2022?

Bank holiday dates slightly across the UK. England and Wales always have the same bank holidays, but Scotland and Northern Ireland have some of their own dates.

For example, Scotland’s summer bank holiday falls at the start of August, rather than the end of the month.

All four nations used to mark the same date, following the implementation of the Bank Holidays Act of 1871, introduced by the Liberal Politician Sir John Lubbock.

However, the date for England, Wales and Northern Ireland moved permanently to the end of August in 1971, following a trial period which started in 1965.

Christmas Day falls on a Sunday in 2022, so its bank holiday will be moved, just as in 2021.

While the Boxing Day bank holiday falls as usual on Monday 26 December, there will be a substitute Christmas day off on Tuesday 27 December, meaning the UK will once more get a four-day festive weekend
